BIO

Upamanyu Kar (b. 1988) - is a composer, educator and a music entrepreneur, who has received his musical education at Rabindra Bharati University in India, where he has obtained a Master of Arts (M. A.) in Western Classical Music. His areas of research and expertise include Orchestration, Traditional Music (Both Indian & Western), Rabindranath Tagore's Music ("Rabindra Sangeet") and the Music of South-East Asia.

Upamanyu has been commissioned by the Pioneer High School Orchestras (Michigan, U.S.), the Indo-European Youth Orchestra (Hungary), the Kolkata Youth Orchestra (India) and the Calcutta Chamber Orchestra (India). He is also the Founder & Creative Director of the String Quartet named as Tagore and the West. He has been featured as a selected composer to be programmed by The Symphony Orchestra of India in 2022, as a successful contestant in a Call for Composers Initiative conducted by The National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai and The Symphony Orchestra of India (SOI).

His musical albums and notable concerts / productions include: Numerous Strings (Commissioned), Naborupe Rabindranath, I, Rabindranath & She (Commissioned) and The Royal Bengal Symphony (Commissioned).

Upamanyu has been awarded the Junior Fellowship by The Ministry of Culture, The Govt. of India for being an outstanding musical artist and for conducting an innovative research-oriented project - When Tagore Meets the West: Symphonic Presentations of the 5 Dance Dramas and Musical Dramas written by Rabindranath Tagore in the field of Rabindra Sangeet in 2022.

As a Philanthropist and an Educator, Upamanyu has made significant contributions in the society through Fundraising for the poor and the needy for several times, and has stood up for several causes and humanitarian efforts, ranging from Covid-19 Support Relief in India to educational support for the underprivileged rural youth. As a part of his noble initiatives through Anudip Foundation, he has conducted Musical Workshops such as The Musicality of Tagore and MIND, MEDITATION & MUSIC, both attracting participants from all over the world. His latest initiative, a Virtual Fundraising Concert Series Aasha Ki Lahar: Musical Hopes for a better tomorrow, has started premiering in August 2021.

Upamanyu has worked as an Examiner / External Examiner at musiCEA International Music Exams Board (2019) and at Rabindra Bharati University, India (2023). 

​

Songbooks authored by him include: Tagore On Keys: Songs written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore arranged for the Piano and Enchanting Tagore.
